[TOOLS] C.E. Johansson
Johansson Gage Blocks and Accessories
Detroit, MI: C.E. Johansson, Inc. / Ford Motor Company, n.d.

n.d. (ca 1928]. Octavo. 47 pp; illustrated throughout in b/w. Introductory letter dated 1928 on Ford Motor Company letterhead laid in. Stapled wraps. Very good. A combination of promotional pamphlet and catalog covering the purpose and usage of gage blocks along with current offerings and their lofty prices. Swedish machinist C.E. Johansson invented gage blocks in 1896 and produced the original line on a modified Singer sewing machine in his home laboratory. Around 1908 he sold his gage block set for the first time in America to Henry M. Leland of the Cadillac Company, and in 1919 he opened his first American factory in Poughkeepsie, NY, however the economic pressures of the post war years and great depression caused him to enter into a cooperative agreement with the Ford Motor Co. who basically purchased the C.E. Johansson company in 1923 and soon after moved operations to the laboratory facility in Dearborn, MI. The Johansson division made jo-blocks for the Ford tool room and any manufacturer who could afford them. In 1936 Johansson retired at the age of 72, and returned to Sweden where he was awarded a gold medal of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences in 1943 shortly after his death. The jo-block still remains in use today.
